This website presents new research showing that today’s social and ecological crises can be traced back to the first major act of our market system—the privatisation of land.
Land privatisation pushed people out of common land systems—systems that had been the foundation for productive and sustainable communities for many thousands of years. To pay the rent or mortgage, people became fully dependent on waged labour—and so on the growth of profit seeking consumer markets.
Although this market system has brought many benefits, it is now also driving serious social and ecological harm. To bring markets back into balance with people and the planet, we need to open up new urban forms of housing and work commons.
